How does a lathe work?

A lathe works according to the principle of cutting 14702: The workpiece clamped in the lathe chuck rotates around its axis while a fixed turning tool on the tool slide removes material precisely and produces the desired shape. The centre distance determines the maximum workpiece length.

The operator can set various machining parameters. The most important of these are

  • Speed (RPM) for optimum cutting speed
  • Feed speed to control material removal
  • Depth of cut to determine the surface quality

On a CNC lathe, these parameters are set automatically via a numerical control, which enables precise movements and reproducible results. In ELMAG machines, the Siemens SINUMERIK control system ensures the best results.

Areas of application for a lathe

14302lathes offer a wide range of machining options and are therefore used in numerous industries and areas of application :

  • Metalworking: Production of axles, shafts, bolts and sleeves for machine and vehicle construction
  • Mechanical engineering: Production of components with high demands on accuracy and surface quality for drive technology
  • Toolmaking: tools, moulds and clamping fixtures with individual geometries
  • Aerospace: Production of high-precision components that have to withstand extreme loads
  • Medical technology: For the production of biocompatible implants and precision surgical instruments
  • Automotive industry: Production of engine components, transmission parts and chassis components

The ability to machine both individual parts and series, depending on the model, makes the lathe an indispensable tool in modern production, which makes a decisive contribution to quality and efficiency in the company.

Special highlights of the lathes from ELMAG

Sophisticated design details in combination with proven precision technology ensure maximum production accuracy and efficiency. ELMAG lathes stand for the highest quality standards and reliable performance in all areas of application:

  • Modern control technology: Our CNC machines are equipped with the proven Siemens SINUMERIK control system and guarantee outstanding production quality. The Siemens control system makes turning considerably easier and at the same time ensures optimum performance
  • Precise machining control: The digital position display on many of our machines enables exact workpiece positioning. With a centre distance of between 300 and 3,000 mm and a turning diameter of 180 to 800 mm, we can cover all relevant areas of application with our models
  • Robust design: A solid, continuously optimised design ensures maximum stability and vibration damping of the lathe. Precision guides minimise wear and guarantee long-term accuracy
  • Complete equipment: With a high-quality RÖHM lathe chuck, quick-change steel holder, Multifix system and a comprehensive range of matching turning accessories 14303 , ELMAG ensures that all components required for professional turning work are available from a single source

Frequently asked questions:

What types of lathes are there?

By choosing the right lathe, companies can optimise their production processes and significantly increase the quality of their products. The main types include

  • Universal lathe: Versatile all-round solutions for classic turning work. Ideal for craft businesses and medium production volumes.
  • CNC lathe: High-precision, computer-controlled lathes with Siemens SINUMERIK control for automated production and series processes.
  • Turning and milling combinations: Multifunctional machining centres that enable turning and milling in a single set-up.
  • Special turning centre: Customised solutions for specific applications and special workpiece requirements.

At ELMAG, we offer a wide range of turning centres with a centre distance of 300 to 3,000 mm, suitablefor different applications and industries. For more information and to help you make the right choice, our experts will be happy to provide you with expert advice.

What are lathes used for?

Lathes are used to machine rotationally symmetrical workpieces and enable, for example, longitudinal and face turning, drilling, thread cutting, parting off and grooving. Typical applications include the production of shafts, axles, bolts, bushes, sleeves and threaded spindles.

Which lathes are used most frequently?

Due to their versatility, universal l athes 14302 and CNC lathes for precise, automated production dominate in practice. Specifically, universal models are ideal for one-off production, prototyping and small series, while CNC machines are used for series production and complex geometries.

Can a lathe do everything a milling machine can do?

No, lathes and milling machines complement each other perfectly, but they cannot perform the same tasks. While lathes specialise in rotationally symmetrical parts, milling machines cannot perform efficient circular machining. As an optimum solution, ELMAG turning-milling combinations combine both technologies in one machine and thus enable the complete machining of complex components in a single clamping operation.

When should you use a lathe and when should you use a milling machine?

A lathe is ideal for rotationally symmetrical workpieces such as shafts, axles, bolts and sleeves, as the workpiece rotates and is machined with stationary tools. Milling machines 14296, on the other hand, are the first choice for prismatic components, 3D contours and complex geometries where the tool rotates and the workpiece is stationary.

  • Lathe: For round, cylindrical workpieces (shafts, bolts, sleeves)
  • Milling machines: For prismatic parts and complex 3D geometries
  • Combination machine: For workpieces that require both machining processes
