How does granulate blasting work?

In granule blasting, compressed air is mixed with an abrasive. A compressor generates the necessary air pressure to shoot the air/abrasive mixture onto the surface at high speed. This loosens the smallest particles from the surface and removes them. Depending on the blasting agent, the material can be cleaned or roughened.

Common blasting media are steel, corundum, sand, plastic granulate, glass granulate or dry ice. The choice of abrasive depends on the material to be processed and the desired effect.

The possible applications of granulate blasting/sand blasting

Granulate blasting machines are frequently used in various sectors, including the automotive industry, shipbuilding, construction and the preservation of historical monuments. They are used to thoroughly clean surfaces, remove rust and remove old layers of paint. They work with a high-pressure air stream that blows an abrasive granulate such as sand or glass beads onto the surface to be treated. Granule blasting machines offer an effective and time-saving method of removing stubborn dirt and preparing surfaces before repainting or coating. They can be used to remove unwanted layers without damaging the underlying surface. These versatile devices are therefore used in many industrial and trade applications:

  • Metal: derusting, paint removal, bright cleaning, deburring, matting, roughening
  • Concrete & façade: cleaning, removing paint/spray damage, repairing cracks, applying decorative materials
  • Natural stone: cleaning, matting, decorating, roughening of smooth tread surfaces
  • Wood & veneer from 0.6 mm: Chemical-free removal of paints and varnishes, artificial ageing
  • Glass & acrylic: matting, decorating
  • Leather: Roughening

Various types of abrasives

Sand, glass beads and corundum are the most common types of blasting granulate. They each have specific properties and applications. Sand removes rust and paint, glass beads are gentle on more sensitive surfaces and corundum is ideal for deburring or roughening metallic surfaces. When purchasing blasting abrasives, it is important to consider the specific requirements of the application in order to enable efficient and precise surface processing.
