How a vibratory plate works

Vibratory plates are motorised construction machines that are used for dynamic soil compaction using vibration technology. Rotating unbalanced masses generate centrifugal forces inside the machine. These centrifugal forces lift the base plate rhythmically off the ground and cause it to bounce back up again. These rapid up and down movements compress soil particles, remove air pockets and achieve permanent compaction.

The compaction performance is measured in kilonewtons (kN), whereby 1 kN corresponds to approximately 102 kg of compressive force. Depending on the application weight and required area of application, ELMAG offers vibratory plates that work with compaction pressures between 10-65 kN. Models with an area compaction of up to 1122m2/h ensure sufficient load-bearing capacity even in deeper soil layers.

Areas of application in construction, gardening & landscaping

With a choice of working widths between 50 and 75 cm, ELMAG vibratory plates enable efficient surface performance with precise processing of details and edges. They can be used for common materials such as gravel, crushed stone, sand-gravel mixtures, recycled building materials and cohesive soils.

ELMAG vibratory plates therefore prove their worth in numerous areas of soil compaction:

  • Pavement construction: for sub-base and vibration compaction of pavements, driveways and terraces
  • Gardening and landscaping: for laying paths and landscaping
  • Civil engineering: for example for compacting trenches and laying pipes
  • Foundation work: to enable optimum preparation of the ground and prevent subsequent subsidence and damage
  • Road construction: for asphalt work, car parks, traffic islands, etc.

Overview of different models

Depending on the work requirements, area size and manoeuvring needs, the appropriate product must be selected in order to achieve satisfactory results. The ELMAG range offers different types of vibratory plates to cover every need.

Forward travelling vibratory plates

Our PC series models are designed for all types of soil cultivation and serve garden and landscape contractors as well as demanding construction sites. These powerful machines move continuously forwards and are ideal for larger, open areas without complex edges. Different sizes are available depending on the intended use. For asphalt work, the models are equipped with a water tank to minimise dust formation and cool the base plate.

Reversible vibratory plates

These vibratory plates are equipped as standard with infinitely variable hydraulic switching between forward and reverse travel and enable efficient compaction of large areas. They are perfect for precise work in confined areas, around obstacles and on complex surface geometries. The construction machines are characterised by a very high compaction performance and are available in different versions depending on requirements. All models have a high-quality steel protective frame to prevent damage. A transport hook is also included as standard.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the right vibratory plate?

The selection of a suitable vibratory plate depends on the operating weight, compaction pressure and working width. Models with a compaction pressure of 10-20 kN and an operating weight of 49-120 kg are sufficient for DIY applications. Professional applications require 25-65 kN with 150-400 kg [AW1] machine weight for optimum compaction results even in difficult soil conditions.

Important equipment features include special transport undercarriages, water tanks to prevent dust, rubber mats for gentle vibration and different base plate sizes for various applications.

What is the difference between a forward-running and reversible vibratory plate?

Forward-running models only drive straight ahead and are particularly suitable for open areas. A reversible vibratory plate can be moved both forwards and backwards. This enables precise manoeuvring in narrow areas and around obstacles. Although they are more expensive to purchase, they offer significantly more flexibility for complex work.

How high is the compaction force of a vibratory plate?

The compaction depth depends on the operating weight: light models (80-120 kg) achieve 20-30 cm[AW2] , medium vibratory plates (120-200 kg) compact to a depth of 40 cm, heavy machines (over 200 kg) achieve a compaction depth of 50-60 cm. It should also be noted that cohesive soils require higher weights than non-cohesive materials.

Do I need safety equipment when working with a vibratory plate?

As vibratory plates can reach over 90dB, hearing protection is essential. Safety shoes with steel toecaps, work gloves and safety goggles to protect against dust are also useful. Vibration-absorbing work clothing is recommended for longer periods of work.
