What is a PTO generator and how does it work?

A PTO generator is a power generator that convertsthe mechanical power of the tractor's PTO shaft into electrical energy. Unlike power generators that run on petrol or diesel, a PTO generator does not need its own engine. The device is mounted on the tractor via the three-point linkage and driven via the standardised PTO shaft. This makes this solution particularly economical, as there are no additional costs for petrol or diesel and maintenance is reduced to a minimum.

The function of a PTO generator is based on the principle of electromagnetic induction:

  • The tractor's rotating PTO shaft drives the generator via a PTO shaft, the speed of which is typically 540 rpm or 1000 rpm.
  • Inside the generator, a rotor with windings converts the mechanical rotary motion into electrical voltage.

A modern PTO generator has an electronic AVR voltage regulator (Automatic Voltage Regulator), which guarantees a constant output voltage regardless of fluctuations in the tractor's speed. High-quality devices also offer switching options between field operation and house operation as well as extensive monitoring functions for voltage, frequency and unbalanced load. The generated energy is available via strategically placed sockets and achieves outputs in the kVA range for demanding applications.

For which machines or vehicles is a PTO generator suitable?

PTO generators are suitable for all tractors with a standardised PTO shaft (540 rpm or 1000 rpm) and three-point linkage. For smaller generators up to 20 kVA, compact farm tractors from 50 hp are sufficient, while larger generators with 40-100 kVA require more powerful machines from 100 hp . The robust design makes the generators compatible with all common tractor brands.

How do I select the right power & PTO speed?

Add up the power consumption of all simultaneously operated devices and allow 20-30% power reserve for starting currents. Your tractor power should be around 2.5 times the rated PTO generator power in kVA - for example, at least 50 hp for a 20 kVA generator. Choose 540 rpm for more compact models or 1000 rpm for larger generators, depending on the available PTO stage of your tractor.

How is a PTO generator installed and operated?

Installation is carried out by connecting it to the tractor's three-point linkage and connecting the PTO shaft to the PTO shaft - ready in just a few minutes. In field operation (IT network), no earthing is required thanks to insulation monitoring; in domestic operation (TN network) as an emergency power generator, professional installation by an electrician is required. Operation is convenient from the tractor seat, all displays and controls are aligned accordingly.

What maintenance is required & how long does a PTO generator last?

A PTO generator is extremely low-maintenance and only requires visual inspections of the connections, checking the PTO shaft and regreasing the bearings every 50-100 operating hours. For professional use, we recommend an annual inspection by our service department to check the generator, AVR control and safety functions. With proper maintenance, the service life is typically between 15-25 years or 5,000-10,000 operating hours.
