How professionals drill: What to watch out for


1. Drill bit selection

Metal: High-speed steel (HSS)

Carbide/stainless steel: metal drill with titanium coating or cobalt alloy

2. Centre punching

Mark the drilling point with a scriber. Apply a hardened centre punch and centre punch the desired drilling point with a short hammer blow - the drill can no longer slip off. For HSS drills with a cross-grinding, punching can be omitted. For large drill diameters, pre-drill with a small diameter first.

3. Speed

To protect the drill, drill hard metal at low speed and low pressure. For softer metals, a higher speed is suitable. The pressure should be reduced before breakthrough.

4. Cooling

Cool the drill after the operation. For long holes, lift the drill several times and add coolant. Take breaks from drilling if necessary.
