Portable power stations for an off-grid power supply

A mobile battery storage unit makes you independent of the power grid and provides excellent service not only outdoors, but also during a power cut. Basically, a portable power station is nothing more than a rechargeable battery. You can use the power station to charge smartphones or laptops, for example, and operate small fridges, televisions or similar electrical appliances.

Depending on the intended use, you should pay attention to the following points when purchasing mobile power stations:

  • Battery capacity: The capacity of the battery is specified in kWh. The higher the number, the more power the device has and the longer you can use it to operate and charge electrical appliances.
  • Inputs, outputs and connections: For example, if you want to connect the portable power station to your car, you will need a corresponding connection including a plug for 12 V/10 A. USB-A or USB-C connections are recommended for charging smartphones.
  • Protection mechanisms: An intelligent battery management system protects against overvoltage, undervoltage, overcharging, overheating and short circuits.
  • Charging options: Depending on how you want to charge your mobile power station, for example via solar, plug socket or via car, you need to make sure you have an appropriate connection.

The lower the weight of your mobile power storage unit, the lower the battery capacity and performance. Devices with the highest possible battery capacity are ideal as an alternative power supply during a power cut, while you can use a lighter mobile power station, for example in combination with solar, on your outdoor trip or when camping.

Self-sufficient when travelling: portable solar and generator sets

To be self-sufficient for as long as possible on your camping trip, festival visit or during power cuts, we recommend combining your portable power station with solar panels. Foldable solar panels have proven particularly useful when travelling. They take up little space and are easier to transport.

The following features make a foldable solar panel the perfect companion for your outdoor activities:

  • Different mounting options: support feet for positioning on the ground or fastening loops and eyelets for mounting on your motorhome or bus.
  • Monocrystalline solar modules: Monocrystalline panels can achieve the same output as polycrystalline modules on a much smaller surface area. This is a great advantage, especially when travelling.
  • Combination: Check whether the foldable solar panel can be combined with other modules to achieve an even higher charging capacity.
  • Output: If there is sufficient sunlight and the weather is favourable, an output of around 100 watts is usually sufficient to supply a motorhome with energy, for example. Solar panels with 200 watts and more, on the other hand, generate sufficient power even in cloudy conditions.
