What are sandblasting machines and how do they work?
Sandblasting machines are pneumatic tools that are used to mechanically process surfaces using compressed air. This is done by the targeted impact of the blasting agent on the surface to be treated.
A compressor generates the required air pressure, which propels the abrasive in the blasting pot through the hose and nozzle onto the workpiece at high speed. The kinetic energy of the particles mechanically removes coatings, rust or dirt with compressed air and roughens the surfaces at the same time.
The blasting process can be precisely adapted to the material and desired degree of processing via pressure control and targeted blasting agent dosing. A modern sandblasting unit has safety valves, pressure gauges for pressure monitoring and ergonomic operating elements for optimum control of the process.
Sandblasting units from ELMAG - models for every need
The selection of a suitable sandblasting unit should be based on the area of application, workpiece size and local conditions. ELMAG offers a comprehensive selection of different types of units to ensure that the right model is found for the respective application:
-
Pressure blasting units are ideal for industrial applications and demanding abrasive rust removal work. They work with a pressurised tank and enable continuous sandblasting with high efficiency.
-
A sandblasting gun enables flexible and mobile work for smaller projects and outdoor applications. The quick change of abrasive and the compact design ensure versatile application options and avoid complex installation.
-
Sandblasting cabinets offer dust-free working in closed systems. The high-quality solutions are primarily used for precise, serial processing of workpieces.
Possible applications for sandblasting machines
Applications for sandblasting machines include, for example, preparation for painting, removal of rust, scale and old coatings. The cleaning of welding seams and deburring after machining are also among the areas of application. With a sandblasting unit from ELMAG, you can ensure optimum results in:
-
Mechanical engineering for deburring and surface preparation of components

Frequently asked questions
Which abrasives are suitable for sandblasting machines?
Commercially available blasting abrasives up to the respective maximum grain size can be processed. This differs depending on the nozzle used - please refer to the relevant product information. Materials such as mineral blasting abrasives made from fused chamber slag, aluminium silicate, corundum, glass beads or special blasting abrasives are suitable . The final selection ultimately depends on the material and the desired degree of processing.
Why can't quartz sand be used as an abrasive?
Ordinary quartz sand and construction sand are strictly prohibited! Sandblasting produces silicogenic dust that can be inhaled and cause serious lung diseases. Only use authorised blasting agents that are harmless to health.
How powerful does a compressor need to be for sandblasting?
This varies depending on the sandblasting machine and is dependent on the nozzle size. For example, a compressor with at least 1,500-1,800 l/min at 8 bar (nozzle size 5 mm) is recommended for the CB 60-F-S2.
The CB 24-F-V6, on the other hand, requires around 850-950 L/min at 7 bar (nozzle size 4 mm).
Mobile hand guns work optimally at around 300-500 L/min at 6-7 bar and can be operated with commercially available piston compressors. It is important to ensure that the compressor supplies sufficient compressed air to guarantee continuous work.
What protective equipment do I need for sandblasting?
Sandblasting requires full equipment: protective mask, dust-proof protective clothing, thick gloves and closed safety shoes. The entire body should be covered.
