Liquid-cooled screw compressors from ELMAG

The screw compressor operates using two rotating, intermeshing screws (rotors) that continuously draw in and compress air without coming into contact with one another. MARK screw compressors from ELMAG utilise liquid cooling:

  • During compression, the coolant (usually oil) is injected directly into the compressor block.
  • The oil fulfils three functions simultaneously: it cools the rotors, lubricates the moving parts and seals the compression chamber.
  • The operating temperature thus remains constant at around 80 °C, regardless of load and operating pressure.
  • After compression, the oil is separated from the compressed air by a highly efficient oil separator and returned to the circuit.
  • The compressed air flows through an aftercooler to the compressed air receiver.

Liquid-cooled screw compressors are used when an operating pressure of 8 to 13 bar ( ) and flow rates of up to approx. 30 m³/min are required.

Screw compressors for trade and industry

A screw compressor is used wherever reliable compressed air is required in continuous operation . The technology is particularly suitable for businesses that use several pneumatic tools simultaneously or operate continuous production processes. Thanks to modern features such as speed control, energy consumption can be significantly reduced, particularly where air demand is low or fluctuating. The combination of high reliability and a long service life makes screw compressors a standard feature in many commercial and industrial businesses today.

Where are screw compressors used?

  • Car repair shops and bodywork workshops use screw compressors to supply lifting platforms, impact wrenches, paint spray gunsand tyre changers simultaneously with constant pressure. The continuous air supply without pressure drops is particularly important during paintwork, where consistent quality is essential.
  • Metalworkingand steel constructionuse screw compressors to power CNC machines, plasma cutters, pneumatic grindersand sandblasting equipment. This is where the 100% duty cycle pays off: production runs without interruption, even during multi-shift operation. Lathesand milling machinesare reliably supplied with compressed air , and pneumatic tool changes operate with precision.
  • Welding shops and metalworking workshops use screw compressors for plasma cutters, pneumatic grinders, sandblasting booths and pneumatic tools. A consistent supply of compressed air is essential for clean weld preparation and precise deburring.
  • Joinery workshops and woodworking businesses benefit from the quieter operation of screw compressor technology. At just 61 to 75 dB(A) , MARK screw compressors are extremely quiet. They reliably supply compressed air to pneumatic nailers, sanders, planers, edge banding machines and wood dryers.
  • Manufacturing companies of all sizes rely on screw compressors as standard. They ensure the compressed air supply for automated production lines, pneumatic controls, packaging machines and quality testing equipment.

Their use is particularly cost-effective where compressed air demand fluctuates: models with frequency control automatically adjust the motor output to actual demand and can thus save up to 35% in energy costs. For businesses with year-round heating requirements , heat recovery is also worthwhile – up to 96% of the energy consumed can be used for heating.

Which is better: screw or piston compressor?

The choice between screw and piston technology will determine your operating costs for years to come and depends on your application profile.

Screw compressors are the right choice if you:

  • Need compressed air for more than 3–4 hours a day (continuous operation where possible)
  • Have several consumers running simultaneously (on a long-term basis)
  • Operate in multiple shifts
  • Value a reliable supply

Piston compressors are sufficient if you:

  • Do not require compressed air continuously, i.e. for continuous operation
  • Use individual tools/consumers one after the other

The rule of thumb: if you use compressed air for more than 3 hours a day or operate several consumers simultaneously, a screw compressor is the more economical choice. The higher initial investment pays for itself within 18 to 24 months thanks to lower maintenance and energy costs: screw compressors only require servicing after 4,000 to 8,000 operating hours, whereaspiston compressors require servicing after just 500 to 1,000 hours.

Special highlights of ELMAG screw compressors

MARK screw compressors from ELMAG stand out thanks to their sophisticated technology and the decades of experience of our experts, which is evident in every detail. The result: reliable equipment you can count on.

  • ES4000 Connect control unit: Monitor your compressor conveniently via the control unit. This alerts you to maintenance requirements in good time, before costly breakdowns occur.
  • Models with integrated refrigeration dryer: Several MARK models feature factory-fitted refrigeration dryers. This saves space, reduces installation effort and guarantees dry compressed air that is ready for immediate use – perfect for all standard applications without the need for additional investment.
  • Quiet operation for the workshop: Screw compressors operate significantly more quietly than non-soundproofed piston compressors. This allows them to be installed directly in the workshop, without the need for separate machine rooms or expensive soundproof enclosures. Noise levels remain below the legal limit.
  • AD 2000-compliant with CE certification: All pressure vessels meet the strict Austrian and European standards. The supplied commissioning report documents correct installation and is important for insurance and operational safety.
  • High-quality components for durability: Robust screw blocks, precision bearings and a maintenance-friendly design guarantee reliable operation for many years. Provided regular maintenance (at least once a year) is carried out, a screw compressor can achieve a service life of 15 to 20 years.

With ELMAG, you can rely on tested quality with a 15-year spare parts guarantee. To help you find the right unit, our techniciansprovide expertsupport , offering professional service from needs assessment and professional commissioning through to preventive maintenance.

Frequently asked questions

What does a screw compressor do?

A screw compressor continuously generates compressed air for the operation of tools and machinery such as impact wrenches, paint spray guns, sandblasting equipment, pneumatic nailers or pneumatic control systems. Unlike piston compressors, it delivers compressed air in continuous operation without interruption, making it ideal for workshops and production facilities with constant demand. Technically, this works via two rotating, intermeshing screws (rotors) that draw in air and compress it continuously without touching each other. In liquid-cooled models, oil is usually injected to cool, lubricate and seal the rotors. After compression, it is separated from the compressed air by an oil separator and recirculated.

What are the two types of compressor?

Three main types dominate industrial compressed air generation. Reciprocating compressors operate with pistons moving back and forth in cylinders and are suitable for smaller air volumes in intermittent operation. They are inexpensive to purchase, but noisy and prone to wear, with a duty cycle of only 50 to 70%. Screw compressors continuously compress air using two rotating screws and are the standard solution for continuous industrial operation from 2 hours a day, offering a 100% duty cycle, quiet operation and low maintenance requirements. Screw compressors are the standard for professional trades and industrial businesses.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of a screw compressor?

Advantages:

  • 100% duty cycle without cooling breaks – ideal for multi-shift operation
  • Quiet operation at 61 to 75 dB(A) instead of 75 to 95 dB(A) for piston compressors
  • Maintenance intervals every 2,000 to 8,000 hours
  • Low vibration thanks to non-contact rotors
  • Smooth, pulsation-free air flow
  • Long service life with proper maintenance
  • Up to 96% of energy recoverable through heat recovery

Disadvantages:

  • Higher initial costs: around 40 to 60% more expensive than piston compressors, but these costs are usually recouped after 18 to 24 months
  • Only cost-effective with at least 3 hours of continuous daily use

How loud is a screw compressor?

Screw compressors operate ata sound pressure level of 58 to 75 dB(A)and are thereforesignificantly quieter than piston compressors, which operate at75 to 95 dB(A). Theycantherefore beinstalled directly in the workshopwithoutthe need foradditional soundproofing measures. By way of comparison: office environments are around 70 dB(A), road traffic at 85 dB(A). The low noise level results from the design, in which the two rotors do not touch and generate no mechanical friction. Modern screw compressors are additionallysoundproofed with noise-absorbing material in the housingand special silencers at the intake and outlet openings. At this noise level,no hearing protectionisrequired(limit value: 85 dB(A) for 8 hours according to the EU Directive), and theflexible central installation in the workshopalsoreducespipework length and thus pressure loss.
