Band saw blades with variable tooth pitch

Band saw blades with variable tooth pitch (also called alternating or combination toothing) have alternating tooth pitches within recurring toothing intervals.
They are identified by two numbers, e.g. 3/4 ZpZ. Here, 3 denotes the maximum and 4 the minimum tooth spacing.
Band saw blades with variable tooth pitch are particularly recommended for sawing material bundles and profiles with different wall thicknesses. Due to the variable tooth engagement, an even cut is achieved.

Further advantages of the variable tooth pitch:

  • Quiet and low-vibration cut: optimum tooth pitch and geometry
  • Straight and clean cut: with guide or broaching teeth
  • Long service life of the band saw blade, yet only low wear and tear
  • Wide range of applications thanks to two installed tooth pitches
  • Rarely necessary to change the band saw blade

What does tooth pitch / teeth per inch / ZpZ mean?

The tooth pitch of band saw blades is given in teeth per inch [1 inch = 25.4 mm]. The correct tooth pitch is crucial for optimal cutting results.

How many teeth per inch should the band saw blade have?

For short cut lengths and/or hard materials, a close tooth pitch is used. Thin-walled materials such as sheet metal, plates, profiles and tubes require a close tooth pitch. The tooth pitch results from the engagement length: For an economically optimal cutting process and to avoid tooth breakage, three teeth should engage the material at the same time.

For long cutting lengths and/or soft materials, wide tooth pitches are used.
Solid material and thick-walled materials require a large tooth pitch. This facilitates the removal of large chips and ensures a straight cut. Soft materials such as aluminium, light bronzes, plastics, Teflon, wood, etc. also require a wide tooth pitch.
