Personal protective equipment - Residual current circuit breaker (RCCB) for generators from 1-44 kVA

  • Personal protection equipment - fault current circuit breaker

The use of an RCCB with earth spike or with the correct earth connection for the generator protects against dangerous fault current and is the most important personal protection measure. When a residual current of 30 mA occurs, the circuit is interrupted and the generator switches off.
  • RCCB or insulation monitoring?

ELMAG® generators are designed with protective separation. This is sufficient for personal protection, provided that only an electrical device of protection class 1 is being operated.
As generators have several connections, the use of an RCCB with earth spike or correct earth connection or - alternatively - an insulation monitoring system is recommended for safety reasons.
Because of their double insulation, electrical devices of protection class 2 can be operated without restriction of numbers with a generator.

Residual current circuit breaker with earth spike
If more than one device of protection class 1 is operated with the generator, an RCCB with earth spike or correct earth connection is required as the minimum additional protection.
Before commissioning a generator with RCCB, the system function and correct configuration of the earthing must be checked and confirmed by a qualified electrician.
An RCCB is therefore recommended for stationary generators and for mobile systems that are used for an extended period in one place and which are set up with the involvement of a qualified electrician.

    Insulation monitoring
Instead of an RCCB with earthing spike, insulation monitoring can be used for mobile generators. It enables simultaneous operation of several electrical appliances of protection class 1.
Commissioning of a generator with insulation monitoring is possible without a qualified electrician. For mobile generators with a location that changes frequently, insulation monitoring is therefore recommended.

Get advice before feeding power into a building power supply
When using a generator for emergency power supply in building installations, it is important to choose the correct personal protection equipment, depending on the type of supply in the building.
