Compressors


When it comes to making the right choice of compressor and associated equipment, there are some things we need to know.


 



  • Consumption: What volume of compressed air is needed for the task?

  • Air quality: What is the moisture content, what oil and particle content is required for the compressed air?

  • Operating cycle: What is the operating cycle for the compressed air?

  • Operating pressure: What operating pressure do the machines need?

  • Suction capacity: Suction capacity (stroke volume) is a standard but inaccurate definition of compressor performance.

  • Effective delivery quantity: Effective delivery quantity is the amount of air actually available.

The easy way to find the RIGHT compressor!


Before purchasing a compressor, you should consider the following points  – because you don’t want just any compressor, you want the RIGHT compressor! 


 


The advantages of compressed air in a nutshell:


Universal use of compressed air for production processes is an attractive technical solution that also offers good value for money. Compressed air systems have a huge variety of uses, they are extremely efficient and have a long service life. Use of compressed air as a carrier medium and for energy storage is ecologically and economically sensible, since it is available without limitation.


 


1. What amount of compressed air is used in the application?


First check the information about the compressed air consumption of the machines and tools to be operated. For an accurate result, the operating time and duty cycle should be included in the assessment.


 


2. What air quality is required for the activity?


The purpose for which the compressed air is being used determines the quantities of particles, oil and water residues that are permitted. At the very least, a standard filter pressure regulator should be uses, even in the hobby sector. For commercial applications, we also recommend the use of a refrigeration dryer, as well as quality compressed air filters.


 


3. Consider the operating cycle!


Is the compressor running around the clock, or is it used only sporadically? If special devices require a short period of compressed air, a larger tank can help. However, the appropriate ratio for the suction capacity must be available. In this context, the unit speed is crucial. The slower this is, the better the compressed air  quality and the longer the duty cycle. And this also makes the compressor much quieter.


 


4. What is the operating pressure of the machines to be operated?


The compressor must be suitable for the device with the highest operating pressure. Pneumatic tools are often designed for 6 bar. Compressors usually produce a slightly higher pressure to compensate for the pressure drop in compressed air dryers, filters and lines (at least 2 bar differential pressure).
Example: Lorry tyres can be inflated up to max. 9.5 bar. In practice, a 10 bar compressor is not suitable for this! A 13 or 15 bar model, on the other hand, would be ideal.


 


5. Real quantity delivered:


This is the actual delivery quantity of compressed air available, expressed in l/min. Since this differs depending on the final pressure, the information about the amount of delivery includes the operating overpressure at which the measurement was carried out.


Determine the real quantity delivered at 8 bar (approximate value) yourself



  • Switch off the compressor and vent the tank to 7 bar.

  • Turn on the compressor and time how long it takes to fill the tank from 7 to 9 bar.

  • And this is how it works: (container contents x 2 bar x 60) / time

  • Example:

    • 100 litre container,

    • 36 seconds from 7 to 9 bar.

    • (100 x 2 x 60) / 36 = 333 l/min

    • The compressor thus provides a real quantity delivered of about 333 l/min. at 8 bar.




 


6. Suction capacity:


(Stroke volume) is a standard but inaccurate definition of compressor performance. It is the product of stroke volume x rotational speed.


 


7. Current type selection! Alternating or three-phase current?


Up to a power of 2 – 2.2 kW, an 230-volt AC motor is adequate. In view of the better start-up behaviour, however, it is an advantage to choose a three-phase device, provided that a 400 volt connection is available.


 



Summary and overview for beginners:


The real quantity delivered is the crucial factor when choosing a compressor, not the suction capacity. The operating pressure of the compressor must be higher than that of the tool you are using.
